Asbestos Abatement

Asbestos abatement is a set of procedures designed to control the release of asbestos fibers from asbestos-containing materials (ACM). Typically the area of abatement will be sealed off, preventing access by the building occupants, owners, and/or the general public. In some cases, this will be the entire building, in others, just a portion of it. Our team will wear protective clothing and use respirators to protect ourselves.

Asbestos removal should be handled only by licensed and certified contractors. Do not try to remove asbestos yourself as it is a dangerous mineral and requires specialized equipment and training.

Call Highland Restoration at 757-254-2854 or send us an email as soon as possible to schedule our asbestos removal services.

Asbestos is a mineral that was used extensively in buildings and ships constructed from the late 1800s to 1978 due to its ability to resist heat, fire, electricity, and chemicals. Asbestos fibers do not have any detectable odor or taste, and they do not dissolve in water or evaporate.

Health effects associated with inhalation and/or ingestion include asbestosis, lung cancer, mesothelioma, and other conditions. No safe level of asbestos exposure has ever been documented which means any exposure carries some risk.

Asbestos abatement is highly regulated

Asbestos abatement is regulated through the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and enforced in the State of Virginia by the Virginia Department of Regulations (VDOR). A complex set of rules governs the thorough inspection procedures prior to a renovation or demolition activity, reporting, notification, and handling and disposal requirements.

Highland Restoration is familiar with all of the rules and requirements of asbestos abatement. Using our services can save you a great deal of time and effort exploring an area with which you may not be familiar.

Asbestos abatement in three easy steps

  1. Asbestos abatement begins with accurate testing by qualified, experienced professionals.

  2. Following the inspection and survey, we will recommend a plan for asbestos abatement that will include details on how the area will be prepared, treated, and cleaned up. If the abatement process for your project includes the removal of the ACM, we will provide a description of how that will be safely accomplished. The scope of work will detail the local, state, and federal laws by which we must abide during asbestos abatement.

  3. The third step is the implementation of the plan.
